Can a tour guide explain the Vasari Corridor to you?

Visitors in the Uffizi Gallery before the Vasari Corridor
In practice, expect no commentary inside the corridor, whatever you pay. The museum staff who escort every group do not give guided tours, and several tour operators state that their guides may not explain inside, so the corridor part of their tours is unguided. On Friday evenings the rules let a tour guide speak quietly, through whisper devices, after the safety briefing. One operator’s guide walks the corridor with you and points things out. Pay a guide for the Uffizi, not for the corridor.

What the museum says

The Uffizi’s rules for accessing the corridor are short on this. Every group is 25 visitors, and carers and private guides count towards the 25. Two members of museum staff go with each group, and they do not give guided tours. The group stays together and nobody may leave it. That is all the daytime rules say about guides.

What the operators say

The tour listings are blunter than the museum. One states that “under current museum rules guides are not permitted to give explanations inside the Corridor, so the Vasari Corridor visit is unguided for all options, including private tours”. Another says “the guide is not permitted to provide detailed explanations but will accompany you”. I take them at their word. They have every commercial reason to say the opposite, and they do not.

What the Friday rules say

The Friday evening rules are the only place the museum allows commentary: tour guides may speak only after the staff have finished the safety briefing, quietly, using whisper devices. The museum offers no whisper service of its own on those evenings, and no audio-guide.

What reviewers found

The summary on the max-9 small-group listing says the corridor segment “feels rushed and offers little commentary”. That matches what I have seen on both of my walks. The exception is the escorted tour, where the guide stays with you: Judith, from the United States, walked it with her guide Sandra and called it “a true privilege”. Even there, the listing says the guide will not give detailed explanations.

What this means for what you pay

A guide earns the money in the Uffizi, before the corridor. On the small-group tours that is one and a half or two hours with no more than nine people, and that is where Tom, from Australia, found a guide who “brought the paintings to life”. Pay for that if you want it, and pay for a tour if the official slots for your dates are gone. Do not pay extra for commentary in the corridor, private tours included; the operators say you will not get it. The guided options are on guided tours and the private ones on private tours.

Check the optionThe €44 and €79 small-group listings have the corridor as an option, and their from-price is the version without it. The escorted tour also sells the corridor as an option; check that it is in your booking, and note that it is non-refundable once it is.

If you want the route explained, read it before you go. I have written the walk out stop by stop on what you see, which takes about as long to read as the corridor takes to walk.

The one tour where the guide comes in

On the escorted Uffizi tour with the corridor option, the guide walks the corridor with the group, about 30 minutes, and points things out without a detailed talk. It meets at the operator’s office in Via Cavour; Jay, from the United States, liked the guide but not the 30-minute walk through crowded streets to the Uffizi. It is reviewed in full on the escorted tour review.

Four of the six options listed here cancel free up to 24 hours ahead; the ticket-and-app option and the escorted tour are non-refundable. Official Uffizi tickets are named and cannot be refunded either.

Frequently asked questions

Do Vasari Corridor tours include a guide inside the corridor?

In practice, no. Museum staff escort every group but do not guide, and several operators state that their guides may not explain inside, so the corridor part is unguided, private tours included. One escorted tour has its guide walk with you and point things out.

Can I use an audio guide in the corridor?

Uffizi audio-guides must be handed back before you enter the corridor. One GetYourGuide ticket comes with an audio app that covers the Uffizi and the corridor.

Is commentary allowed on the Friday evening openings?

Yes, within limits: tour guides may speak only after the staff safety briefing, quietly, using whisper devices. The museum provides no whisper service or audio-guide those evenings.

So what am I paying a guide for?

The Uffizi. A good guide in the gallery beforehand is worth the money; the corridor is walked at the group’s pace with little or no commentary. The guided tours compared.
